Storm Evacuation Interrupts 250th Independence Day Celebration on the National Mall, Washington, D.C., 4 July 2026

I took the Metro to Gallery Place–Chinatown and spent 4 July 2026 on the National Mall, where crowds gathered for the 250th anniversary of American independence and the Great American State Fair.

Around 7 p.m., fair screens announced the event was delayed for severe weather and told visitors to proceed to the nearest exit. A loudspeaker told the crowd to “seek shelter in your car.” Few people moved.

Event staff tried to move them along, then service members in uniform. Around 7:45 p.m., police motorcycles rolled onto the lawn and lined up side by side, phalanx-style. Within about 20 minutes the fairgrounds were clear. Federal officers moved the last people along after that.

The Department of Agriculture building was open, and people filled its halls. Many others waited outside under umbrellas and trees, through the rain, until the Mall reopened.

Getting back onto the grounds meant waiting in line to go through security screening again. Near the line, U.S. Border Patrol agents and state troopers had two men down on the pavement, and a woman nearby was visibly upset. I asked one of the agents what was happening. “Don’t get behind me!” he said. I didn’t learn why the men were stopped.

I left after midnight by Metro from Gallery Place–Chinatown.
